Part 2 - Setting up your gun and yourself for success

Remember when you first started

... you've caught the FT bug and now your ultimate plan is to challenging your brothers in the covenant. Then defeat our interstate rivals, the guys in the South, the East seaboard and eventually take over the world.

Well your dreams of taking over the world look more like a smoldering wreck lying besides the interstate. The thoughts of "gee, this is going to be easy" have given way to " what else do i need to do to get better".

Improving your score -  1 - 3 years

When you first started out you could dump your Chinese spring gun for a good German/English Springer and triple your score. Sadly the amount of points gained vs dollars spent is no longer proportional. You may find the last points that separate you and your trophy may require significantly better equipment (money) and significantly more time.

  1. Don't scatter your time amongst other equipment, Don't get caught up in air rifle envy buying gun after gun. The grass is not greener on the other side; Watch Desperate Housewives you'll see its just as seedy next door. Every time you buy a new FT gun it takes about 6 months to do a real evaluation of their capabilities. Stick with 1 or 2 good guns and shoot the heck out of them.
  2. Perfect your hold and your trigger pull - Practice Practice Practice - Shooting till you wife thinks you're crazy, then shoot some more.  But this time pay special attention to your trigger pull so you don't get into a habit of "pulling off" . Practice a few other positions too, not all of your targets are served up on a plate for you.
  3. Shoot using your "natural point of aim".
  4. Pay attention to the guns balance, this is critical for Springers. You want to shoot the gun the same every time, that means you should may sure your balance point is the same. If you shoot when the guns balance is rearward you'll shoot high and conversly when its to far forward.
  5. Learn how to out shoot the gun before you decide to upgrade or have it tuned. Alot of guys will tune their guns thinking its the gun fault when really its that they havent found a good position that enables them to be consistant and stable. The reason why we miss is not because of our equipment* its because we haven't prepared our bodies or brain properly and it takes alot of time and practice.
  6. Take some road trips with the guys; The World is very different than Diablo. Most of Diablos targets are in close so half of the game has been hidden from you. In competitions elsewhere 1/3 of your targets will be at +40 yards away. For elevation adjustment learn how to "click". Holdover just isn't going to be accurate enough when you get to the longer ranges.  A scope knob with tape on it can help make things easier to see.
  7. Get a real good scope. Forget trying to save a few dollars here and there. The game is won/lost in 2 major areas - range finding the targets at +45yards. Yknow, those 2 points you keep losing by well thats where you're losing them. Get what others are using for FT a Bushnell 4200 or a big Nikko Diamond, period. Most cant afford to buy "glass" over and over again.  Ignore the pundits on the Internet, the forums are riddled with agendas and money making schemes.
  8. To keep from canting use a bubble level or a Microlevel to keep your cross-hairs lined up straight.
  9. I did say 2 major areas, the second area is in the off-hand & kneeling lanes. When you're first starting out i tend to ignore these lanes as your bread and butter is elsewhere.  But you've reached a level where every point counts so this is where you can look for a few extra points. Practice and work on your positionals.
  10. You need to get a gun that fits you. Now maybe your gun is all comfy, maybe it needs a butt hook, a forearm riser, higher cheek piece, balancing weights and a rotated grip. This will save you point or 2 as well, you're less likely to "shank" a shot.
