I thought I had my FT addiction under control for the last few months but with the recent warm weather and a few life changes, I've had a flare up of the old affliction - Field Targetitis. This Sunday was going to be a Glorious Sunday, it was Field Target Sunday.
While drinking my morning cup of Expresso x3 and packing the truck my buddy Riz calls me a lets me know hes going to make the match after all and for me to bring my "A" game cause hes coming for me. Yawn - With the promise of a mild weather (low 80s- sorry Texas) and light wind its a good day to clean a course. Sodas and h20 on ice, my truck loaded with guns I'm finally off but first I need to stop at the local Peets coffee shop to get my customary double shot, long pull expresso and apple fritter; That's drunken black of course, the coffee not the pastry.
As I arrive at the range I see Greg T and Doug B hard at work setting targets. Last month folks said the course seemed easy well, we'll just see about that. Oooo and someone brought donuts (group enhancers), sweet. Donut in hand we start setting the rest of the course.
The Blue pics from our cell phone, probably has pellet lube on the lens.

In spite of my best efforts to hide from the shoot off the other MDs were quick to point out that a shoot off was in order. Rizaldi and I both shot a 44 and only 1 of us could leave the field as the victor. Gorging myself on yet some more macaroni salad they dragged me away from the food to meet my doom. On lane 2 they placed my favorite ½" weasel target at ~40Yards, a paltry 80T on the difficulty scale. This shouldnt take to long right?
A quick coin flip determines that I go first, No worries. Shooting new JSB pellets throughout the match I knew they were hitting high at the further distances but wasnt exactly sure how much. I had basically guessed at the targets during the match and had missed the one at -yes- 40 yards. I get my gun, load a pellet, Range find and dang its 40 yards. I take aim about 1 below the KZ and ½ off to the left for the wind KLAAANG - a miss high. Riz is up and he sets up, takes aim and fires KLAANG He goes again and misses yet again.
Enough of this silliness I get out my old GOOD pellets and take aim, ½ to the left and fire KLAAANG- rimmed it at 3 oclock. FRACK! I go again I give it ¾" to the left this time. Why does the wind always pick up when I shoot? Squeeze and fire Klaaanng 3 oclock yet again. My goose is cooked Riz ain't gonna miss this time; I need an Expresso. Riz goes again and somehow misses twice, Im given one more shot at it and so I hold off 1" to the left I fire but the wind isnt blowing downrange, my pellet flies true and smacks the face 1" to the left. It's decided that we aint good enough to hit that ½" target, were instructed to shoot an easy target instead, 1" at about 42 yards.
About this time Junior NRA Air Rifle Champ Maneva asks if she can take a shot at the weasel, shes always wanted to be in a shoot-off. Deflated and demoralized we agree to let her take a shot. She grabs a seat no jacket, no straps takes aim and yes - she hits it. That's right, it ain't no misprint, she nails it on her first shot, Doooh.
Riz and I both now shamed beyond recognition proceed to whack the 1" target 4 times in a row. But it's no use we're still not worthy. We go back to the ½ weasel and Riz shoots but misses. I take aim 1/2 to the left just like before and fire- THUNK. It's down and the shoot off is mercifully over.
It was indeed a Glorious Sunday a day filled with laughs and surprises. Thanks to all who showed, helped and shot. Special thanks to Bikerscum our Grill Master for the delicious dogs and donuts, Lonnie for the healthy non-meat items. A 18 pack of water mysteriously showed up, Thank You anonymous donor. My hats off to Maneva, Awesome shooting.
Till next month
Kevin
Epilogue:
If that wasn't enough Son whacks the weasel 2 times in a row with his springer right after the shoot off. LOL.
For those who don't know Riz or me, the bravado and arrogance may have been slightly exaggerated for effect. No disrespect is intended nor implied to anyone living or dead, to anyone who may or may not have shot FT, or to any animals whose likeness may have been shot at during the course of this match.
